ABSTRACT
The primary objective of this study is to investigate the significance of diction employed by newsreaders in effectively conveying news and programmes to their audience. The primary objective of this study is to evaluate the existing state of diction, analyse its influence on audience comprehension and involvement, and propose strategies for enhancing diction training and evaluation. The study utilised a survey research design to collect data from a sample of 26 newsreaders employed at Nasarawa Broadcasting Service. The survey questionnaire encompassed various aspects pertaining to confidence in diction skills, feedback mechanisms, training experiences, audience perception, and recommendations for improvement. The study encompassed a sample size of 26 newsreaders who were carefully chosen from Nasarawa Broadcasting Service. These newsreaders included individuals with varying levels of experience and backgrounds within the broadcasting industry. The results indicated that newsreaders exhibit varying levels of confidence in their diction skills, with a notable proportion rating their skills as average or lower. Further findings revealed that feedback on diction from supervisors or colleagues is infrequently received, suggesting a potential deficiency in feedback mechanisms. This study recommends the implementation of regular feedback mechanisms, integration of diction training into journalism courses, utilisation of digital learning resources for skill development, and systematic evaluations of diction skills to ensure ongoing enhancement and efficacy in news delivery. In summary, this study highlights the significant role that diction plays in newscasting and emphasises the need for continuous training and evaluation to ensure efficient communication and engagement with the audience.
